SW-MG Motor India’s New EV Financing Plan
Addressing EV Buyer Concerns
SW-MG Motor India aims to attract hesitant electric vehicle (EV) buyers by introducing a financing plan that addresses common concerns about battery life, resale value, and pricing. These issues have been major deterrents for customers considering a shift from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) Model
For its Windsor EV, MG Motor has introduced a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model. This model, introduced on Wednesday as the first product from the JSW-MG joint venture, allows customers to pay for the car’s ‘shell’ upfront and rent the battery on a per-km basis (₹3.5 per km according to one of the rental schemes).
While battery leasing is not new in India—Mahindra’s Reva offered a similar option in 2010—the Windsor EV is currently the only passenger vehicle with this solution available.
Financial Accessibility
EV ownership may grow less costly due to the new BaaS model. Parth Jindal, Director of JSW MG Motor India, estimates that the average monthly costs for an ICE car valued at ₹9 lakh, including gasoline and servicing, are roughly ₹38,000.
In comparison, the ₹9.99 lakh Windsor EV, with the BaaS plan, would cost about ₹29,500 in EMI and ₹6,750 in running costs, totaling around ₹36,250 per month. This makes the Windsor EV, which offers more features and space, comparable to a ₹9 lakh ICE vehicle in terms of total cost.
Industry Skepticism
Industry experts express skepticism about the BaaS model for passenger vehicles, suggesting it may take time to fully evolve. Ashish Malik, an independent business strategy consultant and EV industry expert, questions whether a battery subscription model is necessary given the significant drop in battery prices, which are nearing price parity with ICE vehicles.
Training and Customer Assurance
To support the new model, MG Motor will invest in extensive training for its employees and dealers. Buyers who purchase a three-year maintenance plan will receive a 60% assured buyback value after three years and a lifetime warranty on the battery for the Windsor EV. This is the first passenger electric automobile manufactured.
Sales and Future Plans
MG Motor reported a 52% growth in EV sales in the first seven months of the year and aims for EVs to account for over 50% of its sales with the introduction of the Windsor EV.
Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director of MG Motor India, highlighted the company’s goal of achieving 80% localization, including battery assembly, with future plans to enter cell manufacturing. According to Chaba, “We are right now assembling the battery, and JSW intends to get into the cell manufacturing sector.”
Looking Ahead
“EVs should be allowed everywhere in this country… Innovation is the only way to achieve it, according to Jindal. Because individuals have different objectives, we have to take the lead. We are a clean, new company, and we have to be aggressive and bring these concepts to market.”
